Sprouts

Sprouts is the name of our children and families ministry here at St John's. The name Sprouts comes from Mark 4 where Jesus talks about the kingdom of God being like a tiny seed that sprouts and grows into something significant. We believe that the children's ministry is really important. It's a time of small beginnings and seeing seeds grow as children become all that God has created them to be.

We meet at 10am, during school terms, as part of our Family Gathering here at St John's. Sprouts starts again February 3rd, 2019. We would love for you to join us.

Discipleship Groups - Interest Night

Discipleship Groups - Interest Night

A growing plant is a good image of what it means to grow as a follower of Jesus. Plants need water, light, and nutrients. As followers of Jesus we don’t just grow spiritually spontaneously - yes God does the growing but some cultivation of the plant is important. Meeting regularly with other Christians to pray, read the Bible, and encourage one another is a key part of cultivating healthy growth in our spiritual lives.

This year at St John’s we are starting up some discipleship groups. These groups will meet weekly to pray, study the Bible, and to encourage each other in faith. These groups will be hosted at different times during the week so there will be lots of options that work with various schedules. The groups will run throughout 2019 finishing up in December and new groups will be formed in 2020. Another component is that monthly these groups will all meet together for a meal and mission activity in our community. If you’re interested in knowing more, and we hope you are, please come along to our interest evening on Wednesday the 20th of February (and if you can’t come but are interested please get in touch with the office).

Ash Wednesday Service

Ash Wednesday Service

Ash Wednesday is the day marking the beginning of Lent. A cross is drawn on the foreheads of the members of the congregation and the words: “For dust you are and to dust you shall return” are recited. I know it doesn’t sound all that cheerful but the point is that we are mortal, we all experience the pain and brokenness of this fallen world and life just simply isn’t always wonderful. Ash Wednesday gives us the opportunity to our acknowledge our need for Jesus. Ash Wednesday is an invitation to humlity, and an invitation to repentance (acknolwedging we need Jesus and turning from our own ways to follow him). Come along and begin Lent with this special time of coming to Jesus for forgivness and hope.

Prayer in the Parish

Prayer in the Parish

Prayer is such an important part of being a Christian. In prayer we discover more about God, ourselves, and the world we live in. Prayer is our connection point where we hear from God and where we can ask our Heavenly Father for guidance, direction, and empowerement to be who we are created to be.

We meet for a special prayer service once a month on a Tuesday night at St John’s

For some online resources for your own personal prayer, check out "Prayers on the Move" put together by SPCK. CLICK HERE for a link.

“Do not forget to pray. Each time you pray, if you do so sincerely, there will be the flash of a new feeling in it, and a new thought as well, one you did not know before, which will give you fresh courage; and you will understand that prayer is an education.”  ― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov.

Home Groups

Here at St John's we reckon that a lot of the important stuff that the church is all about happens outside of Sundays.

There are a few groups that gather during the week.

These groups meet to read the Bible, to pray and to eat cake (sometimes). Anyway, if you are interested in being part of a home group during the week contact us and try one out!

Sunday Gatherings

Sunday is an important time as we get together to worship.

We meet at 8am for the early birds! This is a NZ Prayer book communion service. It is a more quiet and reflective service with traditional hymns, a sermon and communion.

We also meet at 10am. This is a NZ Prayer books communion service too but a little less formal! We say prayers, sing hymns and songs, hear from the word and take communion. There is a kids lesson during the sermon time and children are encouraged to participate in this service.

Come along and worship with us sometime, we would love to see you.
